Purpose: To encourage freshman to read a minimum of four books over the summer as a preparation for the significantly increased volume and difficulty of reading in the Upper School.One book will be the assigned Upper School book, the other three from the provided list on this Wiki. Please make at least three blog entrees for each book. Students are strongly encouraged to read more books of their choice and simply let Mrs. Bonnyman know what you are reading. There are vocabulary and word spelling practice links as well.
Books 1. There’s a Porcupine in My Outhouse by Michael J. Tougias. This is a humorous account of one young man’s attempt at becoming an outdoorsman.
2. Learning to Bow by Bruce Feiler. This is the self told story of a young teacher who went to Japan to teach English to 7th graders; funny and fascinating.
3. All But My Life by Gerda Weissman Klein. This is a WWII memoir of a holocaust survivor; touching and compelling. 4. Notice that it has large titles and smaller subtitles, and that there is a small introduction right after each large title. Think of reading your history as recording chunks of information by topic and details. Work one paragraph at a time, reading the whole paragraph and then asking yourself, “What is the main idea here, and what are supporting details?” Write the details under the topic in short form. Click on the following link and print off the first chapter of notes. Doing one subtopic at a time, see how you do making your own notes. First however, read through the attached notes to get the hang of how to do it. Then go one subtopic at a time, and compare what you do to the attached notes. By the end of the chapter you should feel a little better. It takes practice, but before long taking notes from your history book will be fast and easy.
